15 chunky brogues and loafers you’ll wish had actually been part of your uniform.
Well that’s it. Summer’s over.
Actually, the weather’s supposed to be pretty nice for a while yet, but I’m excited about getting into my autumn wardrobe, and the kids going back to school is always a marker for me to start wearing my winter wardrobe, albeit without tights for the time being. The majority of my brogues and loafers have been on the higher reaches of my shoe shelves since May, but this week I’ve been using my stepladder (yes, I have a folding stepladder purely for accessing my shoe shelves!) so that I can get them down to easy reach again.
Unfortunately, most of my actual school shoes weren’t as cool as the shoes you see here, save for my Dr Martens and a pair of leather and suede loafers from Next that I ended up keeping well beyond my Ryde High years. But that’s the whole point of this week’s Friday shopping fix – as an adult you can invest in the back to school vibe, safe in the knowledge that you aren’t going to grow out of them before next September.
I actually have surprisingly few pairs of black shoes; although they are undoubtedly practical and versatile, they can be a little tricky to pair with jeans and skirts. I often break up the harsh line of black against my pale skin or light denim with a pair of ankle socks – COS is always a good bet and I noticed yesterday that Arket has a brilliant selection of my favourite skinny ribbed socks.

Alternatively, you could opt for a pair of burgundy brogues or loafers, as I did on my first day at school many MANY years ago. I love these moc croc loafers from Aldo (3 – NB they come up a little big so you may need to go down a size), as well as Massimo Dutti’s derbies (14) and these very shiny brogues from Office (7).
10. Charles & Keith checked derby shoes, £75 ([AD] charleskeith.co.uk); 11. Paul Smith ‘Grand’ brogues with striped soles, £350 ([AD] paulsmith.com); 12. Dr Martens ‘Gracia’ shoes, £110 ([AD] drmartens.com)
Alternatively, look for something a bit different like a two-tone. They’re well out of my budget, but I love these loafers from Burberry (2). Try GH Bass and Next for similar styles. And Charles & Keith’s checked derbies (10) are an absolute joy!
