15 lilac shoes and accessories

In case you didn’t get the memo, THE colour of the season is lilac (I’ve actually already written about lilac sneakers this season, which you can read here). And while there are plenty of trousers, knitwear and jersey pieces in lavender shades available right now, I wanted to concentrate on the accessories. Because I’m not really into the idea of purple clothes. It was my favourite colour when I was 12 and frankly, I can’t wear it now without feeling like I’m still at the age where I’m in urgent need of the help of an authodontist.

Ancient Greek Sandals and Aldo

1.Ancient Greek Sandals terry towelling sandals, gift (not currently available but try ancient-greek-sandals.com for similar); 2. Aldo ‘Eraveth’ slides, £40 (aldoshoes.com)

3. Baia mini tote, £225 (pre-order now for delivery in May, baiabags.co.uk); 4. Charles & Keith sandals, £49 (charleskeith.com); 5. Next resin earrings, £16 (next.co.uk)

Fast forward thirty years, and even with much straighter teeth, I find it’s a tricky colour to wear. But hey, that’s just me! I’ve picked pieces here, however,  that I think have worked it well for a more subtle take on this look-at-me trend, in case, like me, you just want to dip your toe in. Take these Charles & Keith sandals, for example (4), with their different shades of purple, or Zara’s jewel earrings (10), both of which are a nice entry into lilac if it’s not really your thing ordinarily (because let’s face it, it’s a bit of a statement colour!).

6. Zanzan sunglasses, £210 (zanzan.co.uk); 7. Marks & Spencer pumps, £35 (marksandspencer.com); 8. Mulberry small Darley satchel, £450 (mulberry.com)

A bag is a good way in, too, since the colour isn’t next to your skin. I don’t like to wear pastel colours next to my face as it doesn’t suit my skin tone (unless I have a tan!), but I could definitely entertain the idea of this Baia mini tote (3) slung over my shoulder. If you do suit lilac, though, sunglasses could be an ideal light purple option for you, whether that’s on the frames (see Zanzan, 6), or on the lenses (Topshop, 13).

9. Oysho sandals, £29.99 (oysho.com); 10. Zara earrings, £12.99 (zara.com); 11. Mango shoulder bag, £35.99 (mango.com)

As for what to wear with your lilac – you could go bold and block with other colours throughout the rest of your outfit (check out Erica Davies on Instagram for a masterclass in this), but using your lilac accessory as your statement in a more muted look would also work well. Oh, and lilac looks fantastic with blue denim. What doesn’t?!

12. Toms lilac classics, £38 (toms.co.uk); 13. Topshop sunglasses, £14 (topshop.com); 14. Aldo pool slides, £30 (aldoshoes.com)
