The fashion world has spoken! Lavender is the colour of the year, as far as the catwalks are concerned. It was everywhere, and you might have noticed it dropping into stores on the high street already. Pantone, on the other hand, has decided that its colour of the year is ultra violet. Either way, purple is big wardrobe news, and it’s making me feel rather nostalgic.
Regular readers of this blog and my books will have heard me harping on about my first ever pair of Converse before. I got them for my 13th birthday in 1990 and I still have them, though they are rather battered and are too small for me, so I keep them just because they are so special. You see, these are the shoes that not only got me into shoes; they got me into fashion. After I got my hands on these kicks, my whole attitude to fashion changed. I based all of my outfits around them. When I grew out of them, I replaced them with another pair of Converse. Without my parents going to the trouble of hunting them down, you might not even be even reading this blog!
Crucially, as you can see, they are also purple. Or rather, “grape”, which was the colour listed on the box. So all of the lavender – or lilac, ultra violet, or whatever you want to call it – that’s around at the moment is giving me throwbacks to being a teenager and fancying a Swedish exchange student called Jens so much that I saved up a bought a Minnesota Vikings jacket like his. (It was also lilac, and I also still have it. Yes, I am a hoarder).
All this nostalgia is all well and good, but where can you get your hands on some purple trainers right now? Converse doesn’t have grape Chucks in stock right now, but I’ve found 11 very good alternatives, some of which are in the sale (and I have the adidas Gazelles on order…coming to an Instagram post near you very soon!).
