I’ve been meaning to do a post on plimsolls for a while now, so with the release of Grenson’s new offering, I thought now would be the perfect time! Grenson’s come in two shapes – high top and low top – and two colours which frankly, I wouldn’t be able to choose between. Every time I think I’ve made a decision I change my mind!

So what makes a plimsoll a plimsoll? Often regarded as the oldest example of trainers, they came about when some clever soul figured out the vulcanisation process, which allowed the rubber sole to be fused with canvas. Favoured by Victorians, who wore them to the beach as early as the 1830s, the name comes from the ‘plimsoll line’ on a ship. In both cases, if water gets above the line, the inside gets wet, whether that’s the ship’s cabins or your feet!

Anyway, I’ve noticed loads of really nice ones around recently, so I thought I would do a round-up of my favourite (and lesser known) brands. Not all are canvas these days (the grey Grensons are felt) but they all have the same retro vibe which I love. Of course there are LOADS of other plimsoll brands out there which I like too, but I’m sure you already know about most of them! So this is a selection of slightly more under the radar shoes I think you will love.

I’ve been hankering after a pair of white Spring Court with gum sole for ages now. They’re just so cool! The best stockist I think is Pam Pam – it has LOADS of colours. Sadly my favs aren’t in the sale just yet but these lovely pastel ones are.

I’ve written about this brand before but I’ve had a sneak peak at what’s to come for next season and I’m really excited about it! Meanwhile, you can pick up this season’s styles for a steal in the Kicks Love sale.

This is a new brand for me, but brilliant if you love that European plimsoll vibe; you can often pick up styles like this in French supermarkets but these are such a great price you don’t need to wait for your next trip to Brittany! Available in absolutely loads of colours including classic white and Liberty print, as well as these lovely green and yellow ones.

I love the naive simplicity of these plimsolls from Kawasaki, as well as the full-on retroness. Oh, and the price is pretty good too! The Natural Shoe store has a brilliant selection of styles and colours.

Finally a brand that I would have no idea existed if it weren’t for its GORGEOUS collaboration this summer with J Crew. These are a little sturdier than some of the other pumps featured here, but are also more snazzy! I absolutely love the stripes and they come in a blue gingham too, which I have featured before. They’re not in the sale yet so keep an eye out for reductions!
