Sneakers made from algae, and the rest of this week’s Shoes News

It’s tennis season!

Lacoste Straightset

InStyle’s editor-in-chief Charlotte Moore and me wearing Lacoste Straightset sneakers #twinningiswinning

My favourite time of year (other than Christmas, OBVS!) is now. It starts with the Chelsea Flower Show and ends before the kids have broken up from school, but my absolute favourite period is the last week of June and first week of July…otherwise known as WIMBLEDON FORTNIGHT! We’re not quite there yet, but it does mean we can all start thinking seriously about tennis shoes. And contrary to what you might think, my favourites aren’t Stan Smiths; my favourite tennis shoe is the Lacoste Straightset.

There is SO MUCH to love about the Straightset. It’s petite in its proportions which makes it very flattering on the foot – a particularly good trainer to wear with bare legs. It’s insanely comfortable. And this year, it comes in loads of lovely pastel shades. Not all of them are available just yet but they’re being released this month, so keep your eyes peeled! Don’t get cross with me about the fact that my chalky white ones, pictured top, aren’t available anymore, because one of the great things about Lacoste is that they offer new colours all the time, so there’s always something new and you’re less likely to see anyone else wearing the same ones (unless you got your editor at InStyle to buy them because you said they were so amazing and you kept wearing them on the same days to work, as happened here).

Three of the best…fancy frilly flat mules

Clockwise from left: bow satin slides, £89.99,; Mystique Saturated slides, £158,; Jeffery Campbell bow slides, £108,

Have you noticed how well the high street is doing this summer with flat sandals? Shout out to the high street! It’s doing so well, in fact, that I can dedicate three of the best to a different type of sandal every week for the next few, and today it’s all about the fancy frilly mule. Most weeks will probably be about mules or slides to be honest, because they’re EVERYWHERE and I can’t get enough of their ease and slip-on-and-offableness.

Shoes made from algae (this is NOT fake news!)

Vivibarefoot X Bloom trainers

Following last week’s Shoes News that told of the trainers and sandals helping to clean up the oceans, this week I bring you the extraordinary news that from July, you will be able to buy shoes made from ALGAE. These Vivobarefoot x Bloom Ultra III shoes are made by harvesting harmful algal blooms from fresh water sources (these are created by us human idiots pumping chemical waste into the waterways) to create a plant-based foam which is then fashioned into the shoes. Each pair will help to re-circulate 57 gallons of filtered water back into natural habitats, and prevent the equivalent of 40 balloons full of CO2 being released into the Earth’s atmosphere. How amazing? You can read more of the scientific stuff here and it’s explained rather nicely in this infographic.
