My LFW white trainers challenge

London fashion week has just finished, and last week it was New York fashion week (what, you didn’t notice me mention it on Instagram?!), and this goes some way to explaining my radio silence on the blog recently, as I’ve been working my statement socks off. Sorry about that.

Anyway, never one to shy away from making my life more difficult than it already is, I decided to set myself a little challenge for LFW – I had a self-imposed rule that I was only allowed to wear white trainers (and clothes as well, obviously. I don’t mean white trainers and nothing else!). This idea came to me when I was in New York – where it was freezing – and my Northern Cobbler Stonefish trainers were my staple footwear. They look good with EVERYTHING, and they are roomy enough to fit a pair of warm, snugly socks, too. Here they are (above) with some excellent New York pavement graffiti. They have also just come back into stock if you fancy a pair for yourself. I highly recommend them.

So, here’s how I got on with my LFW challenge (you can also see my full outfits in my InStyle flat shoes gallery).

LFW day 1: Senso

I’m very lucky with the job I do at InStyle, because people send me things to wear at fashion week (sometimes for keeps, but mostly for borrows). These leather bow trainers from Senso are one such thing. I love that they are quite fashion forward with their design, but they’re still just essentially a white skate shoe, so are really easy to style. Here they are pictured with my white trainers buddies from team InStyle, Kenny (in Valentino) and Emma (in adidas). The Senso trainers aren’t available to buy just yet, so watch this space.

LFW day 2: adidas Superstars

Regular readers of this blog or my book will know that I have been wearing adidas Superstars – or shell toes – for the last twenty years. I LOVE them. They’re obviously really comfortable, but they also add a timeless, effortless cool to any outfit. Here I am wearing them with suede trousers but I find they look great with calf-length skirts, tailoring, shorts, jeans, dresses….pretty much everything, actually.

LFW day 3: Asics Gel-Lyte III

I often make fun of Asics trainers, using them as an example of what people wear to the gym but should never wear for their walk to work before they change into their smart shoes. But these are smart shoes! Because they are all-white (and INCREDIBLY white, I might add – like you need to wear sunglasses to look at them) they have a fashion edge and they’re made even more comfortable by the fact that they have no tongue. I don’t know what the purpose of this is, but I like it.

LFW day 4: Rose Rankin Coney

I know I harp on about these trainers but really, aren’t they brilliant? Still just about sneaking into the white trainers category but pimped up with a spattering of animal print. I went completely monochrome with the rest of my outfit to match which is quite unusual for me (I am a colour fiend) so black and white was a statement in itself for me.

Next up is Milan…where I plan to wear socks and sandals every day. MARMITE KLAXON!
