Last week I was asked to speak about British made products for a campaign called Let’s Make It Here. Its aim is to encourage British manufacturers make their products at home and as someone who is keen to reduce my carbon footprint, this is music to my ears. It got me thinking about my favourite British shoe brands, so this week I’ll be doing a series of posts where I will be celebrating the Best of British.
First up are New Balance trainers. OK, so this isn’t technically a British brand, but it has been manufacturing shoes in England since 1982. It still makes 28,000 pairs of shoes a week in its Cumbrian factory, 90% of which go to a European market. The brand is so proud of its award-winning domestic manufacturing, it has made a film about it which you can view here.
These trainers are a real favourite with the fashion pack because of their simple, retro design and vast choice of colours. They are the perfect shoe to recreate MaxMara’s AW13 catwalk look too. Don’t be scared to wear them with a skirt rather than just as a casual option on a Sunday. And with prices starting at just under thirty quid, you can afford to invest in a couple of pairs in different colours.
Check back tomorrow when I’ll be talking about brogues that are made in the UK.
